How to remove dust from a speaker grille
- Play a familiar recording at a comfortable level and note whether speech is quiet, muffled or distorted.
- Turn the device off and disconnect cables before cleaning. Remove the case so you can see the opening.
- Follow the manufacturer's directions. Where permitted, lightly clean the outside with a dry, soft-bristled brush or a soft cloth.
- Keep particles outside the opening. Do not push a brush or pointed object into the mesh.
- Turn the device on and repeat the same recording at the same volume.
Does speaker cleaning sound remove dust?
Speaker movement may disturb a loose particle, but we have not established that it removes dust, earwax, compacted lint or dried residue. A low-frequency water eject tone is not an ultrasonic cleaning device. We therefore offer a listening comparison here rather than claiming a powerful dust-removal frequency.
Use your manufacturer's instructions
Apple's speaker troubleshooting instructions describe using a small brush that is clean, dry and soft-bristled when cleaning is necessary. Other devices can have different materials and maintenance requirements. Check their support guidance first.
Avoid pins, needles and pushing debris through the grille. Do not assume liquid cleaners or compressed air are suitable for your device.
When cleaning changes nothing
If speech is still distorted after external cleaning, the problem may be inside the device or unrelated to dirt. A left and right speaker test can help check output, but cannot diagnose a damaged driver. Persistent problems need manufacturer support or repair.
If recent splashes are the likely cause instead, read the water eject instructions. For a broader checklist, see muffled phone speaker troubleshooting.
